🕵️👀💵 Companies to Follow (recent fundings):
A great way to know about possible upcoming job opportunities is to follow fundraising news and stay ahead of other applicants. You can learn about a company’s plans and expansion goals (i.e. what they are going to focus on) and fine tune your profile by performing relevant pilot case studies. For instance, if an agtech company has raised funding to focus on satellite monitoring of harvested crop types, you can utilize open source datasets and build a deep learning model for crop classification in order to stand out among other applicants when open positions are announced.
Here are a few companies to keep an eye on:
🌽 Bushel (the US grain trading platform) has raised $47 million in a Series C round. Link
💨 Persefoni (the carbon accounting and management platform) has raised $9.7 million series A funding. This is a big news, as their seed funding round was just 6 months ago (August 2020) and they raised $3.5 million. Persefoni was founded in January 2020. Link
🌊🖥 Jupiter Intelligence: Jupiter has hired (and is currently recruiting) 20 positions since the beginning of 2021, and their CEO, Rich Sorkin, recently announced on Linkedin that they will be hiring 50-100 more people in the next 6-12 months. As they are trying to expand their global presence, positions may be located at US, UK, Japan, or Australia.
🇮🇳🦄 Great time for Indian entrepreneurs!
Following a decade of growth, India’s startup scene is producing unicorns at a healthy clip. Thus far this year, 11 India-based startups have raised money at $1B+ valuations. VC funding in the first quarter reached a two-year high and could be on pace to pass the $10B VCs invested in 2019 (up from $3.1B in 2012). Very recently, Amazon launched a $250M venture fund for India-based startups.
📚📖 Useful Resources:
In the past two weeks, I received several questions on where and how to start with python and geospatial programming. There are many good examples out there on Youtube or xarray’s website, and I highly encourage you to explore them. In addition, here are a few useful resources:
Metpy Youtube channel: Link ==> A lot of videos on how to process and visualize climate data in python
Learn Google Earth Engine (+ how to install and start python) in 90 minutes: All you need to know presented by Qiusheng Wu at the 2021 Geopython Conference: Link to video, Link to notebook
Twitter accounts to follow and learn from (Academic Twitter is a great resource for learning tips and tricks and to learn about open positions):
Qiusheng Wu: @giswqs ==> Google Earth Engine
Justin Braaten: @jstnbraaten ==> Google Earth Engine
Ray Bell: @RayBell_DTN ==> Coding, Python dev, useful webinars, and industry updates
Radiant Earth Foundation: @OurRadiantEarth ==> Data/ML challenges, workshops, tutorials, and resources
I declare no competing financial interests. This is a volunteer project and I have not received any financial incentive to advertise these jobs.
