Geospatial Jobs #40: Nov 2, 2023
Welcome to the 40th issue of Geospatial Jobs, a career newsletter focusing on data science and geosciences (🌧climatetech, 🌽agtech, 🌊risk modeling, ⚡️energy, 🛰remote sensing, ♻️sustainability, and more).
🎄🎅 There are usually fewer open positions at the end of the year (i.e. the coming weeks) especially when fears of recession and economic downturn are still lingering. If you’re a job seeker, you can use the next months to stand out among the crowd. Here are a few suggestions that worked for me in the past:
Showcase your skills: Everyone lists python on their resume, but performing a case study and sharing the results publicly will go a long way. You may benefit from the pre-processed datasets on hackathons or data science challenges. Here’s an example I shared ~2 yrs ago.
Improve your skills: Take online courses if needed. There are a ton of free resources on Youtube, Medium, and so on. If you’re interested in learning python, here’s a tutorial that may be helpful.
Reach out to peers and stay connected: Seek advice but remember that eventually you need to do the homework. I receive a lot of inquiries, but the number of people who actually listen to suggestions and follow up afterwards is unfortunately disappointing.
Work on your interview skills: your narrative (and your response to the question “tell me about yourself”) matters. Prepare a 2-4 minute narrative that best describes you (and write it down and practice it over and over). That will become useful for updating the about section of your LinkedIn account.
