Geospatial Jobs #50: Jun 26, 2024
Welcome to the 50th issue of Geospatial Jobs, a career newsletter focusing on data science and geosciences (🌧climate-tech, 🌽ag-tech, 🌊risk modeling, ⚡️energy, 🛰remote sensing, ♻️sustainability, and more).
Not having a consistent volunteer is really challenging and it causes delays (thus some of the positions will no longer be available). Every few months, I ask for volunteers; people sign up, and then they either don’t respond to my initial message, or we talk and then they disappear, or they partially help with one or two issues and then they disappear. And the cycle starts over with me asking for volunteers again.
There are about 8,000 subscribers and I’ve kept this effort free for everyone to really be helpful as much as I can. I still advocate that positively impacting the career (and life) of thousands of people is worth an hour of volunteer work per week :) IYKYK ✌️

🕵️💵 Recent Fundraisings / Updates:
It’s not always sunny in startup world. Two recent updates:
Gro Intelligence, the Ag insights platform that had raised $85M series B round in 2021 and was one of TIME’s 100 most influential companies is closing down.
Planet announced plans to reduce global headcount by ~180 employees or roughly 17%.
Now the fundraisings:
Chloris Geospatial, a natural capital carbon MRV provider, raised an undisclosed amount of Seed funding.
🇬🇧 ClimateX raised $18M to project and price Climate Risks.
🇩🇪 LiveEO raised €25M for AI climate risk.
🇪🇸 Mitiga, a climate analytics firm, raised €8m Series A extension round.
Understory, a property risk mitigation provider, raised $15M series A round.
WindBorne raised $15M to scale its balloon constellation and bring AI weather modeling.
💡📚 Useful Resources:
Google Academic Research Awards - $300,000 for developing ML benchmarks to tackle climate challenges.
Google climate change accelerator: A 10-week equity-free program for Seed to Series A startups based in Europe & Israel.
AI for Climate and Nature Grand Challenge: a $100 million initiative from the Bezos Earth Fund.
I had shared two Python tutorials in the past, and they still seem to be useful for many people. Sharing them here again:
Postdoc / research positions:
🇺🇸🫏🐘 The US presidential election is coming up and there’s an absurd number of job openings in the government (to pump up the number of new job stats? to brag that these can’t be filled fast enough?). Good for those who are eligible to apply because they were not born in a “designated country”🙃.
